The most important thing is to have a sense of responsibility, commitment, and concern for each of our fellow human beings. – Dalai Lama

THIS SAYING seems to be about the duty of each human being towards the rest of humanity. This duty has three aspects, responsibility, commitment and concern.

Earlier this month, a TV anchor in Chhattisgarh named Supreet Kaur stunned colleagues and eventually the world with her exemplary commitment to her work when she read out the breaking news of her husband’s death in a road accident.

In this context, School Times focuses on some students who have either exhibited rare values of commitment to duty, courage and bravery or they may have witnessed such instances among friends and relatives. “My 16-year-old cousin brother, Ravish Kumar, displayed extraordinary courage while confronting two chain snatchers who took away a school principal’s gold chain. Kumar, who wants to join the Army or Delhi Police, fought the criminals and recovered the chain. The principal rewarded the student for his courageous feat,” says Manju Sharma, a Class 10 student of Model School, Vivek Vihar.

Another youngster, Harshita Sharma, a Class 12 student of Rukmani Devi Public School, Pitampura said, “A calm, serene woman who lives near my house lost her husband in a car accident. But that was not all. After her two sons got married, they threw her out of their home. Keeping alive herself-belief, she then decided to strike out for herself and become independent. Even after experiencing austerity all her life, she never spoke ill against anyone. Eventually, she began teaching slum kids and in this found the true goal of life. Defying all odds, she followed the dictum that serving humanity and doing her bit for society is the true duty of human beings.”

“My friend Navya managed to score 95% marks in Class 12 examination despite the death of her father just a few weeks before the exam got underway”, said Aastha Arora, a fellow student from Sardar Patel School in the capital. “Cheerful Navya not only remained strong but also handled her mother and didn’t allow anyone else to even get an inkling that she had undergone such an intense emotional turmoil”, Arora added.

Anshika Sharma, a Class 10 student from DAV, Sreshtha Vihar, said,“My 13-year old cousin from Vadodara, Gujarat, showed extraordinary presence of mind when her school bus lost control. She managed to safely squeeze out of the bus through a window, saved a few children, and called an ambulance as well as the police using her teacher’s phone. Thanks to prompt action belying her young age, the student kept many kids conscious and called up their parents.”

deserve kudos, we would also do very well to realise that the people behind such praiseworthy decisions are not always individuals who are specially endowed. Even you, readers, are capable of it in your spheres of life. The reservoir of these qualities runs deep in each one of us. It’s high time we should tap this reserve of goodness that lies within and truly enrich ourselves.
