SC seeks reply on plea against TN Npower plant

- HT Correspondent letters@hindustantimes.com

The Supreme Court on Monday sought the Centre’s and Tamil Nadu government’s response on an appeal against the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) clearance granted to units of Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KKNPP).

A bench headed by Justice MB Lokur asked for the response on a petition filed by nuclear activist G Sundarrajan challenging the order of the National Green Tribunal (NGT).

The petition, filed through advocate Prashant Bhushan, said the Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) was not done by an accredited agency and also violated the accepted norms and procedure prescribed under the Environment (Protection) Act.

Challenging the NGT’s order refusing to quash the clearance, the petitioner said grant of the CRZ clearance was wrong as various environmental issues have not been dealt with.

The plea has sought setting aside of the verdict of November 29 last year of the southern bench of the NGT. Bhushan argued the earlier SC verdict was only on units 1 and 2 and in that matter, CRZ clearance given to units 3 to 6 was not under challenge and, therefore, the SC should scrutinize it afresh.

The East Champaran district police on Saturday gave a ‘clean chit’ to a two-year old child who had earlier been implicated in a case pertaining to molestation of a 35-year old woman at Bela Baiju village under Patahi police station.

The police declared as false, two cases filed against the child and its parents, in a swift reaction following the publication of a report in saying a two-year old child had been named in a case of molestation. It also decided to arrest the village head Sunil Kumar Shah and his co-accused, in a case filed by Ramnarayan Baitha, grandfather of the two-year-old.

In its story carried on the

portal, Friday, HT had reported that a two-year-old had been implicated in a molestation case filed by one Mina Devi to save the village head, who was accused in a case filed by Ramnarayan Baitha, grandfather of the two-year old.

Inspector general of police Anil Kishore Yadav had directed the SP, Motihari, to arrest all the culprits, but instead of arresting them, the victims and the two year-old were implicated in a false case.
