BJP TO HOLD WORKSHOP FOR NEWLY ELECTED COUNCILLORS
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Delhi plans to conduct a workshop for its newly elected councillors in the three municipal corporations.
A party insider said a formal orientation programme is imperative for those who would be elected as corporators as all of our candidates are first-timers and don’t have appropriate knowledge of civic bodies’ functioning.
“They are inexperienced. So, the leadership is of the view that to make them understand the working of the municipal corporations, they (elected members) should be given training about their working and administration system. They are expected to perform from day one,” he said.
Another party functionary said the responsibility to impart guidance on how to work in the municipal corporations may be entrusted to senior councillors who were holding important posts in municipal bodies over the last 10 years.
“The newly elected councillors will be given training to deal with various public welfare issues more efficiently and the focus would be on good governance. We will train them to deal with the bureaucracy as well as issues pertaining to public to ensure that all grievances are addressed in a time-bound manner,” said Vijay Goel, union minister and former Delhi BJP chief.
He also advocated unification of three corporations. Goel added that for the improvement of basic amenities in the city and smooth functioning of three civic bodies, they should be unified.
“Except the South Delhi Municipal Corporation, both — east and north Delhi corporations are facing acute financial crisis. It would be better if all three are merged,” he said.
The lack of understanding among the to-be elected councillors is also a cause of concern for the Congress. The party has picked 220 new contestants. Delhi Congress chief Ajay Maken earlier told HT that experienced councillors will help them get familiar with work.
