Civic bodies issue alert for dengue, chikungunya
ON GUARD South corp suggests precautionary measures, fines for residents flouting norms
The early reports of a dengue and chikungunya outbreak in the city has put civic agencies on their toes.
On Tuesday, South Delhi Municipal Corporation commissioner Puneet Goel issued an advisory to all government departments to take every precautionary measure possible to contain an outbreak.
“We have asked the departments of Central and state government — such as CPWD, PWD, DDA, Delhi Police, Delhi Jal Board and Delhi Metro Rail Corporation — to nominate a nodal officer who will ascertain if all precautionary measures were taken. Likewise, registrars of all universities and deemed university in Delhi have been asked to follow the guidelines prescribed by the department,” said a senior south corporation official.
The civic agency has also called meetings with RWAs, market associations and residents where they will be told to contribute in keeping their surroundings clean. As per reports by SDMC, till April 22, the city had reported 30 cases of dengue and 80 chikungunya. In comparison, till April end last year, seven dengue and no chikungunya cases had been reported.
According to Goel, the prevention and control of the vector borne diseases has become essential as there is no specific treatment against dengue and chikungunya. “Data relating to previous year reveals that there was a jump in number of chikungunya cases. Hence, we are taking all precautionary measures and specifically concentrating on schools, colleges, offices and work places,” said Goel.
South corporation is the nodal agency for collecting the data related to vector borne diseases in Delhi.
