his wife of infidelity, a 44-year-old retired BSF personnel allegedly shot at his wife with his licensed gun in southwest Delhi’s Chhawla early on Tuesday.

Believing his wife to be dead, Nityanand then walked towards the local police station to surrender. But a police team that had already been alerted about the firing intercepted him on the way and arrested him.

Nityanand’s wife, 40-year-old Sunita, is admitted at Safdarjung Hospital with a bullet to her abdomen. “Her condition is critical,” said Surender Kumar, DCP (South-West), when asked if the woman would survive.

Nityanand lived with his wife, and a teenage son and daughter in Sarika Vihar that falls under the jurisdiction of Chhawla police station.

The DCP said Nityanand was an alcoholic and had been relieved of service by BSF a few years ago because of his addiction. Back at home, Nityanand would suspect his wife of infidelity and frequently quarrelled with her over this issue, said the DCP.

A similar quarrel over this issue late Monday night led to physical violence and continued until early morning.

“Nityanand brought out his licensed double-barrel gun and shot at his wife from close range,” said Kumar.

The couple’s children and neighbours heard the sound of the gunshot and rushed to the crime scene to find the woman lying in a pool of blood. Nityanand, however, had managed to slip out of the house believing he had eliminated his wife.

One of the neighbours informed the police and a team rushed to the spot to learn that Nityanand had escaped. The woman was taken to a local hospital. He was finally nabbed close to the local police station. He has told police he was on his way to surrender.
