AIADMK deputy general secretary TTV Dinakaran was formally arrested by the Delhi police late on Tuesday night for allegedly paying bribe to a middleman to get the disputed two-leaves party symbol for his faction.

He was arrested along with his aide Mallikarjun after three days of questioning at the Chanakyapuri crime branch office.

Dinakaran has been accused of paying bribe to middleman Sukesh Chandrashekhar to get the symbol. The dispute over the party symbol erupted after the AIADMK split into two groups following the death of party supremo and then Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa.

Police sources said Dinakaran was jointly interrogated with Chandrashekhar. He was quizzed about the ₹1.3 crore found from Chandrashekhar’s room in a five-star hotel in the city. Chandrashekhar, who was arrested on October 16, is learnt to have told police that he received money from Dinakaran. Police said some amount of the money was transferred to Chandrashekhar through online banking. The role of a Chandni Chowk-based hawala trader is also being probed.

Dinakaran came to Delhi on April 22 after police summoned him for interrogation. A police team had visited Chennai and served him summons. “We will probe Chandrashekhar’s claims. He had promised Dinakaran that he will get the symbol allotted to him through his contacts in the Election Commission. We are also probing the role of a retired bureaucrat of Tamil Nadu cadre,” said an officer.
