Sindhu, Saina gear up for Asia C’ship

All eyes will be on women’s singles specialist­s P.V. Sindhu and Saina Nehwal as they carry India’s hopes in the Badminton Asia Championsh­ips, starting here at the Wuhan Sports Center Gymnasium on Wednesday. While Saina has two bronze medals from the continent’s marquee event in the 2010 and 2016 editions, Sindhu has a bronze from the 2014 Gimcheon edition.

Dinesh Khanna is the only Indian to have claimed a gold medal in the Asia Championsh­ips, when he finished top in the men’s singles category in the 1965 edition in Lucknow. his planned league in India, saying he won’t allow “politics” to bog him down. “The Politics of boxing does not stop champions.. we only know how to Hit Harder! Get ready for some thrilling action,” Amir tweeted a day after AIBA decided against backing his Super Boxing League (SBL).

The SBL is set to roll out from July 7 to August 12 this year. It will feature eight franchises and each team will comprise six players (five men and one woman with six back-up players).

India finished with a rich haul of three gold, two silver and 11 bronze medals at the US Open Karate Championsh­ip held in Las Vegas. Shaifali Agarwal, Abhishek Sengupta won a gold medal, a silver in two different individual events. India also won a gold medal in the team event.

The Indian team was led by Yashpal Singh Kalsi and members of the Indian contingent were trained under coach Sensei Kalsi.
