Chappell urges administrators, captains to keep ODI format alive
Ian Chappell feels that interest in ODI cricket is on the wane and has urged the administrators and the captains to keep the format alive.
There has been a general feeling among cricket fraternity that the rise of T20 cricket has seen the one-day format being sidelines and Chappell also thinks on the same line.
“I’d hate to see it squeezed out but the signs haven’t been great lately,” Chappell was quoted as saying by foxsports.com.au. “It’s still a game of cricket, whereas T20 is more a balance between entertainment and cricket and the balance is probably more entertainment than cricket. It would be a pity if the 50-over game went by the wayside.”
He blames the self-interest of International Cricket Council’s full members and a lack of imagination from sides in the middleovers, which is the dullest period during a one-day match, for the slump. Chappell sternly feels that the demise of one-day cricket would be bad for the sport in general and says that governing body should do more make it appealing to the audience.
