Teenagers flung from Badarpur flyover after car hits motorbike

teenagers riding a a motorcycle without helmets were killed after being flung over a flyover when their bike collided with a speeding car near the Badarpur metro station in south Delhi on Friday evening. .
The motorcyclists, an 18-yearold man and his female colleague of the same age, sustained serious injuries on their heads because of the fall and died on way to hospital.
Initial findings suggested neither were wearing helmets.
“So far we have not found any helmets from the accident spot, but it is too early to conclude anything,” said Romil Baaniya, DCP (southeast).
The police identified the deceased as Sulabh Pandey, a resident of Faridabad. Sulabh’s friend, identified as Prachi, was riding pillion with him and worked with him at a provisional store in Faridabad.
Sulabh was riding the motorcycle and was headed towards Delhi from Faridabad. The accident took place right after he climbed a flyover on Mathura Road near Badarpur metro station around 5pm.
Sulabh’s motorcycle was hit from behind by an allegedly speeding Honda Mobilio car on top of the flyover.
The impact of the hit was such that the motorcycle was flung to a side and it rammed the railing on the roadside.
While the motorcycle came to a stop on the road, its two riders were flung over the flyover. Prachi landed on the road below, while Sulabh landed on the road divider below.
Both the victims appeared to have landed on their heads, a few feet from each other, and were found in pools of blood. Motorists who saw the duo fall rushed to their aid and called the police.
A police team quickly arrived at the scene and rushed them to a hospital where they were declared brought dead.
“The main injuries were to their heads. There were relatively minor injuries on their other body parts as well,” said an investigator, suggesting that the duo could have been saved if they were wearing helmets.
The car involved in the accident, meanwhile, was intercepted by other vehicles on the flyover and its driver nabbed.
The driver of the car, Mohammad Anwar, was handed over to the police later who booked him for causing death by negligence and rash driving.
A resident of Shadipur depot, Anwar works as a driver for the car owner who is a resident of Shadipur too.
He has told police he lost concentration for a moment, leading to the accident, said an investigator.
Last month, a 16-year-old boy on a motorcycle was killed when a Mercedes car hit his bike head-on in west Delhi’s Paschim Vihar.
The boy wasn’t wearing a helmet, the police later found.
