A grenade was recovered from a well in Red Fort on Thursday evening, almost three months after a large cache of weapons were found in the premises of the same historic monument.

Jatin Narwal, DCP (North), said the grenade was found in a well in the fort’s Sawan Bhado Garden by some sanitation workers during a cleanliness drive around 6pm on Thursday. “The Red Fort staff immediately alerted the police, after which a team from the NSG visited the spot,” said Narwal.

The sanitation drive in and around the well continued through the night into Friday morning, but was completed before the monument was opened for visitors. Underwater cameras were used to search for more possible weapons, but no more were found.

Police sources said the grenade appeared to be decades old, and its pin was missing. But unwilling to take any chances, the bomb disposal squads took it to an undisclosed location with the help of an unmanned robotic vehicle covered with ‘bomb blanket’ to avert an accidental blast.

Earlier in February this year, a large cache of explosives and ammunition was recovered from Red Fort. The recovery had compelled the authorities to shut down the monument for a day.
