A 65-year-old businessman under police protection was shot dead at his shop in Delhi’s Rohini Sector 23 on Friday night.

Around 6 pm on Friday, Ratan Lal Chauhan, who deals with disposable plates and glasses, was sitting in his shop when two men arrived in an i-20 car and opened fire at him. The attackers pumped five bullets into Chauhan’s head from point blank range and he died on the spot.

Police were trying to find the attackers or the motive behind the murder.

Senior police officers claimed they had identified the owner of the i-20 car in which the assailants came. The owner had been asked to join the probe.

Rishipal, deputy commissioner of police (Rohini district), said eight teams had been formed to probe the case and arrest the attackers. “Our teams are conducting raids at possible hideouts of suspects in Delhi, Chandigarh, Hisar and other places in Haryana. They will be nabbed soon,” he said.

Chauhan was provided police protection as he had received death threats. His son was murdered in March last year after which a man was arrested in the case, police said. The constable who was deployed as a personal security officer (PSO) for Chauhan was not present when he was gunned down.

“Constable Jagat Singh was not present at the spot at the time of the incident. He has been suspended and an inquiry will be conducted by the additional DCP (Rohini. Action will be taken for the negligence on his part or other officials,” said the DCP.

Chauhan’s son Gaurav was killed last year over a financial dispute. He had borrowed Rs 1.5 lakh from a friend and was unable to return it, police said. Gaurav had gone to meet his friend at his home where he was killed. His friend is in judicial custody.

Chauhan’s kin suspect the role of the friend’s family. They alleged the accused had threatened to kill them after a court hearing last year.

The DCP, however, said they were not informed about any such threat.
