The South Delhi Municipal Corporation is planning to come up with a scheme to lay a dedicated pipeline to supply recycled water in South Delhi.

The recycled water will be used in parks and gardens in south Delhi, the civic body informed the National Green Tribunal.

Earlier this month, in a review meeting held to discuss the condition of air pollution in Delhi, Lt Governor Anil Baijal had urged the PWD and DJB to ensure permanent watering facility for roadside plantations.

He said treated water of nearby sewage treatment plants could be used to water the plantations for their survival.

The SDMC told a bench headed by Justice Jawad Rahim that it would frame the scheme within two weeks.

“According to the substance of the decision, the SDMC will frame a scheme for laying of the pipeline to use STP water for its parks. They seek two weeks’ time to frame a policy. They are permitted to file copy of the draft policy,” the bench noted.

Such a facility is already working in two blocks of Vasant Vihar where water from a drain (nullah) was being treated at a treatment plant installed by the Residents Welfare Association. It is now being operated by the civic body.

“We had set up the treatment plant nearly a decade ago. But now it is run by the SDMC. Around 14 parks in two blocks are being watered. We have urged the SDMC to install a few more treatment plants in Vasant Vihar so that all 52 parks could be watered,” said Suresh Goyel president of Vasant Vihar RWA.

The NGT was hearing a plea filed by Mahesh Chandra Saxena, who claimed to be associated with an NGO working in the field of ground water conservation. The matter would be heard again on May 29. The petitioner also sought directions for the use of recycled treated water from DJB’s sewage treatment plant at Qutub Metro Station to avoid wastage of water.
