Mama’s boy reveals secret behind ‘Sachin, Sachin’ chant
Despite loads of information on Sachin Tendulkar, there is still so much about the cricket icon that is unknown.
On the occasion of the release of the second song of his docu-drama ‘Sachin: A Billion Dreams’, Tendulkar revealed it was his mother, rather than his fans, who started chanting his name.
“My mother started it. I used to go play downstairs and to call me back, mother would call ‘Sachin Sachin’,” Tendulkar said, when asked about the first time he heard the rhythmic calling of his name.
‘Sachin, Sachin’, the anthem created by Oscar-winning music composer AR Rahman for Tendulkar’s biopic, was released in Mumbai on Tuesday.
Every time Tendulkar walked out to bat, the chant reverberated in the stadium.
“I never thought ‘Sachin, Sachin’ would continue beyond my playing days. It has now gone to the theatres. So, I feel happy,” he said.
“The chants were my supporters’ way of showing their love.
“I have been inspired by their chant and it has helped me face difficult situations on the field knowing that I have the country with me. I admire the way Rahman has created an inspirational anthem around this chant.”
There is an iconic picture of a young Tendulkar holding a cricket bat. Asked about it, he said, “This was taken at home when I was playing with my brother. This was in the balcony. I was four or five then. What I enjoyed was hitting the ball, be it a cricket bat or a tennis racquet. My brother would chuck the tennis ball, and a few I used to hit with the cricket bat and a few with the racquet.”
