GHAZIABAD 22yearold jumps in front of speeding train six days after father had killed self, family of deceased refuse postmortem Megha’s father had a footwear business in Karol Bagh. Things just fell apart for the family one day. Her parents had a fight and her father committed suicide.

A 22-year-old chartered accountancy student killed herself by jumping in front of a speeding train in Ghaziabad on Thursday — six days after her father had killed himself in a similar manner at the same spot.

The deceased, identified as Megha Verma, had left her sector 23 house an hour before the incident and had told her family members that she was going to visit a friend and would come back soon.

Around 1.30pm, she reached the spot under the ALT flyover in Raj Nagar where her father, Ashok Verma, had killed himself, on May 5.

“There was some altercation between Megha’s parents during which her mother suffered some injuries. Megha’s father Ashok thought that his injured wife may not survive and jumped in front of a train on May 5. On Thursday, my sister also committed suicide at the same spot. Her body lay near the tracks for one and half hours before the police arrived,” said Rahul Tyagi, the victim’s cousin.

Since Ashok’s death, the family was in severe depression, with the deceased man’s brothers also having threatened to commit suicide at the same spot.

“Since all this was happening, I suspected that Megha might also try something similar. So, I rushed to the spot under ALT flyover when she failed to return home on Thursday and found her lying dead near the tracks. Her body bore multiple injury marks from the impact,” he added.

The victim was pursuing a chartered accountancy course and has two brothers.

“Megha’s father had a footwear business in Karol Bagh. Things just fell apart for the family one day. Her parents had a fight and her father later committed suicide. Now, she also took the same step and ended her life. We will try to bridge the small opening from where people cross the tracks to prevent such incidents in the future,” said Ajay Sharma, local councillor.

Meanwhile, police wanted to conduct a ‘panchnama’ and postmortem of the victim’s body, to which the family refused.

“The family did not want any legal formalities as there were severe injuries on the victim’s body already. They have given us in writing that they don’t want a post-mortem to be conducted. So, we allowed them to take away the body,” said Manish Mishra, circle officer (city).
