father of a Uttar Pradesh cadre IPS officer was shot dead inside his house at Sector 2 of upscale Raj Nagar locality in Ghaziabad on Thursday.

The police registered a murder case against the younger brother of IPS officer Sanjeev Tyagi after the body of the 65-year-old man was discovered early on Thursday morning.

Police said that the accused, identified as 26-year-old Anuj Tyagi alias Dabbu, the brother of IPS officer Sanjeev Tyagi, was suffering from schizophrenia. He has been booked for murder at the Kavi Nagar police station after a complaint by the family and was reportedly absconding.

The police are yet to ascertain whether the murder of Ishwar Tyagi was planned or the fallout of a sudden provocation.

Three police teams have been formed to trace and nab Anuj, who is a BTech.

Police said the members of the family — including Sanjeev Tyagi, who is posted in Lucknow — had stayed at the house till a day before the incident. On Thursday morning, the victim’s wife Raj Kumari went to Ishwar’s room to wake him up around 6.30am and found him dead, lying in a pool of blood on the bed.

“After a complaint by the family, we have booked Anuj for murder. We are trying to find out the reason behind the attack. The family of the deceased told us that Anuj allegedly shot dead his father. The accused had stayed at home during the night and shot his father dead in the morning. We have found that Anuj had been suffering from schizophrenia and was undergoing treatment at a hospital in Delhi,” said Akash Tomar, superintendent of police (city).

The police were informed by the family about the incident around 8.30am. On Thursday, the police and the family members remained tightlipped about the incident and the motive and waited for Sanjeev to arrive from Lucknow. After his arrival, a formal complaint was filed at Kavi Nagar police station.

The victim, police said, hailed from Morta area of Ghaziabad. Apart from Sanjeev and Anuj, the deceased has three other sons — Praveen, Kuldeep and Kapil.

Sources in the police said that Amuj had started some business in partnership some time ago, and was going through a rough patch. He was later found to be suffering from schizophrenia.

“Anuj stayed back at home on Wednesday night along with the victim, his wife, domestic help Manish and Sanjeev’s wife. The family has not spoken much about the incident but Ishwar was allegedly shot dead in sleep in the back of his head. The murder weapon is yet to be recovered,” said a police officer who is investigating the case.

The police stated that they are scanning the CCTV footage installed at the house and will be using it for investigation. The police are also yet to ascertain the motive and the type of weapon, whether licensed or illegal, used during the incident. They are awaiting the post-mortem report of Ishwar.
