An online betting racket operating from east Delhi’s Vishwas Nagar has been busted with the arrest of six men, including three gamblers, police said on Thursday.

Nupur Prasad, DCP (Shahdara), said that on the day of the raid, the online money transacted during a single IPL match itself had exceeded ₹1 crore. There is evidence of the huge transactions, said the DCP, adding that some bets appeared to be placed at as much as ₹5 lakh.

The betting racket was busted on Tuesday after a police team was tipped off about the racket operating from a flat in Vishwas Nagar. The match that evening was between the Kings XI Punjab and Kolkata Knight Riders.

“Six persons were found to be part of the betting racket when our team raided the flat. These included three men working as racket operators and three gamblers,” said the DCP.

Apart from records of transactions worth ₹1 crore, the police also seized a suitcase to which mobile phones were attached, two laptops, two TV sets and 22 mobile phones.

During the interrogation, it was revealed that one of the operators, Manmohan Krishnan, was the owner of the flat and two associates were helping him run the racket, said police.

“They used to take bets online from across the country. The bets were being placed over each ball bowled, as well as on the overall result of the match,” said the officer.

The betting racket was allegedly operating for a long time and similar amounts were changing hands for each match, said police.
