CIVIC BJP councillor Kamal Sehrawat is likely to be south Delhi mayor while Neema Bhagat is set to be mayor from east civic body

BJP’s councillor from Dwarka, Kamal Jeet Sehrawat, is likely to become South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) mayor, while the top post in the East Delhi Municipal Corporation is likely to go to Geeta Colony’s councillor, Neema Bhagat.

Sehrawat and Bhagat, who filed their papers on the last date of filing the nominations on Friday, are likely to be elected unopposed as no other political party has fielded candidates against the two.

The BJP won 181 out of 270 seats in the recently concluded civic body elections that was conducted on April 23.

The results were declared on April 26.

The elections for the post of mayor, deputy mayor and different posts of standing committee in South Corporation are on May 19. The elections for the posts in EDMC are on May 22.

Bhagat, who would be leading an inexperienced team as most councillors are first-timers said, “Most of the councillors are first-timers but they have good experience in managing the organisation as they have been associated with the party for a long time.”

“We will also work under the guidance of senior leaders of the party,” said Sehrawat, a Jat leader, who has been Delhi BJP’s women wing president.

The mayoral nomination process in EDMC saw some drama before Bhagat’s name was finalised as Bhavna Malik, a councillor from Mayur Vihar Phase-II, was also expecting her nomination.

Sources in the corporation said there was a slight delay in the filing of nomination as the supporters of Malik were unhappy over Sehrawat’s candidature for the post. The matter was resolved after senior leaders intervened.

Bhagat has been BJP’s general secretary of the women’s wing and hails from Almora in Uttarakhand.

BJP also nominated Kailash Sankla, who won the elections from Punjabi Bagh, for the post of deputy mayor in SDMC. The party nominated Vipin Bihari Singh, who clinched Patparganj seat, for the post in EDMC.

Earlier, BJP councillor from Rohini, Preeti Aggarwal, filed her nomination for the post of mayor in North Delhi Municipal Corporation.

The three corporations will have female mayors as the post is reserved for women candidates as per the Delhi Municipal Act.
