ERRORPRONE LAHIRI SHOOTS 75 IN PLAYERS CHAMPIONSH­IP

Small misses and mistakes by Anirban Lahiri added up to a three-over 75, which may result in him of missing the cut at The Players Championsh­ip at the TPC Sawgrass course.

Starting from 10th, Lahiri was two-under through eight holes with birdies on 11th and 16th, but a double on the 18th, and the three bogeys on first, seventh and eighth spoilt the card. Lahiri, playing at The Players for the second time, missed the cut the first time in 2015. With the cut likely at even par, Lahiri will need a strong second round to get into the weekend. William McGirt shared the lead with Mackenzie Hughes. Both shot 5-under 67.

India’s Harinder Pal Sandhu was on Friday in sight of his sixth PSA title as he reached the final of the Malaysian Tour Leg 9 squash tournament. Sandhu, seeded second, reached the final of the PSA world tour event after beating fourth-seeded Mohd Syafiq Kamal of Malaysia 11-7, 7-11, 11-2, 6-11,11-4 in a 66-minute semifinal.

Harinder now faces the Malaysian unseeded Henry Leung.

Defending champions Mohun Bagan played out a a 1-1 draw against Bengaluru FC but still ended on top of Group B in the 38th Federation Cup football tournament on Friday. They will face East Bengal in semifinals on Sunday. Alwyn George’s 12thminute strike was cancelled by a 50th minute Sony Norde goal for Bagan as both teams shared the spoils. Ten-man Shillong Lajong defeated DSK Shivajians 3-2 to register their first victory.

In a symbolic gesture to remember Mohun Bagan’s historic win over an English team in 1911 IFA Shield, the first ticket of FIFA U-17 World Cup will be handed to the grand daughter-inlaw of the Kolkata giants’ then captain Shibdas Bhaduri at a ceremony here on May 15.
