Hamilton takes pole in Spain

Lewis Hamilton took pole position ahead of Sebastian Vettel at the Spanish Grand Prix, restoring Mercedes’ dominance in Formula One qualifying on Saturday.

Hamilton gave Mercedes its 19th pole in 20 races, two weeks after F1 leader Vettel had broken its run at the Russian GP in a onetwo with Ferrari teammate Kimi Raikkonen.

Hamilton was fastest in 1 minute, 19.149 seconds, with Vettel only 0.051 behind.

It was Hamilton’s 64th career pole and his third in five races this year, putting the three-time world champion in position to challenge Vettel for the series lead on Sunday. With two wins in four races, Vettel has a 13-point advantage over Hamilton in the standings.

Boxing Federation of India’s three-member disciplina­ry committee will seek Vikas Krishan’s explanatio­n for forfeiting his Asian Championsh­ips semi-final bout, on May 20. The three-member committee, headed by veteran BFI official Asit Banerjee, and comprising vice-President Rajesh Bhandari and Nirwan Mukherjee (Uttarakhan­d Boxing Associatio­n chief), will conduct the hearing in the capital.

India’s Anirban Lahiri went six-over for a hole and failed to make the cut in the Players Championsh­ip on Friday. On course to make the cut (applied at two-over par) at even par for 35 holes, the player who had made eight cuts in 10 starts found water from the tee. He hit two more into water, landed his fourth on the fairway, eighth on the green and two-putted for a 10, missing the cut after finishing six-over.

Indian GM Harika Dronavalli lost to Swedish GM Erik Blomqvist in the third round of the TePe Sigrman & Co chess.

Harika’s loss, after two draws, left her sixth overall.
