BSF OFFICER SEEKS MANEKA’S HELP FOR SISTER AFTER ‘THREATS’

Nabeel Ahmed Wani, a BSF commandant from Jammu, who wrote to Union minister Maneka Gandhi on Sunday requesting her to help his sister get a hostel, clarified on Tuesday evening that it had nothing to do with any threat by militants.

It came hours after the Women and Child Development (WCD) ministry put the following tweets from its official handle: “Nabeel Ahmed Wani is Commandant in BSF whose sister is an engineering student in Chandigarh.

He requested Smt. @ManekaGandhiBJP to get hostel facility for his sister as she was being threatened by militants.”

Wani, who topped the All India Examination for BSF Assistant Commandant (Works) last year, is currently undergoing training in BSF Training Academy in Tekanpur, Gwalior.

When contacted by HT on Tuesday evening, Wani said, “My sister is doing her civil engineering from a college in Chandigarh. She was asked by the hostel authorities to vacate her room. Since I am undergoing training and cannot go I wrote to Maneka Gandhi ji seeking help in arranging hostel for my sister.”

Gandhi responded promptly by speaking to the hostel authorities. “Following the minister’s intervention, the hostel authorities agreed to let my sister stay in the hostel,” Wani said.

Wani reiterated that his sister has not received any threat from militants. “She was just worried that being a Kashmiri she won’t find a place to stay. Media should not unnecessarily sensationalise everything,” he added.

The incident comes a week after lieutenant Ummer Fayaz was killed by militants during his cousin’s marriage in Kashmir.
