-

This lake and two other lakes in the area have, in the past few years, attained notoriety as death traps after frequent mishaps involving visitors.

“Our students used to visit the lake till a few years ago. When some of our students drowned, we had to dig the road,” said Prashant Bhalla, chancellor, Manav Rachna International University. “The lake water is green. Visitors, mostly youth, get tempted to have a dip,” said Manmohan Singh, Tehsildar Bhadkal.

Last year, Karan Singh, a resident of Baudutt Colony in Ballabgarh, lost his life in the same lake. Singh, a kabaddi player, used to visit the area for kabaddi coaching classes.

Around two years ago, a Delhi Technical University student, too had drowned in the lake. Vitan Kumar (22), a resident of Pushp Vihar, had been to the Surajkund area on a picnic with friends.

In March the same year, a TV journalist too drowned in the lake. Abhey Singh was on a weekend picnic with five friends when the incident occurred. His body was fished out the next day.

Four years ago, two students, including one from Delhi University, had drowned here. They bodies were found the next day.

“Signboards warning people against going close to the lake have been set up at some places, but picnickers hardly pay attention,” said a senior police official.
