LAW, INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS SOME OPTIONS FOR POL SCIENCE STUDENTS

- Ambar Ahmad is an assistant professor at the department of political science in Kamla Nehru College, University of Delhi

The scope of Political Science is very broad. Traditionally, it focused on the study of the state, exercise of state power and the formal political institutions in the public domain. Over time, the ambit has broadened and today the central question in the study of politics is about the distribution of power, opportunities and resources at all levels and in all domains of human life.

There are two common misconceptions about Political Science. First, it is assumed that it is a ‘soft’ or ‘easy’ option. Actually, it is a course that requires commitment, extensive reading and complete focus. Second, the subject is considered dry, abstract and far removed from the everyday concerns of a common man’s life. This is not true. It is the study of the human condition and is intimately connected with the questions that arise in every thinking mind.

Studying Political Science equips the students to interrogate received knowledge and to move beyond a common-sense understanding of the world to think critically and analytically and to acquire understanding of socio-political processes rather than sporadic events.

BA Political Science (Hons) in DU is a three-year undergraduate course, which comprises Core Courses, Elective Courses and Ability Enhancement Courses.
