A 27-year-old factory worker was crushed inside an elevator in Narela’s DSIDC on Sunday morning, police said.

On Sunday morning, Jaan Mohammad was loading goods into the elevator on the ground floor to go to the third floor . As he reached out to the elevator’s gate to manually close it as it was not shutting automatically, it suddenly began moving up, said Rishi Pal, DCP (Rohini).

Trapped between the lift doors even, Mohammad was dragged till the third floor where the elevator finally came to a stop.

His cries drew other workers at the factory. They rushed to the third floor but by then, he was severely injured. He was rushed to a hospital where he died during treatment.

The police registered a case of causing death by negligence and identified the factory owner as Megh Raj.

Police said Raj, owner of Satyam Plastics, would be questioned about the maintenance of the elevator.

Initial probe suggested the elevator malfunctioned.

Mohammad’s family and neighbours protested outside the factory and claimed negligence.

When the police tried to remove them, they allegedly pelted stones and injured at least five policemen. Senior officers arrived at the scene and convinced the protesters to return home.

Mohammad worked at a factory that produces plastic products and lived at a rented accommodation in Narela’s Kureni village.
