DAV School wins regatta event

DAV Public School (Chandigarh) stole the limelight, winning the senior boys ‘Fours’ event on the opening day of the KC Mahindra All India Invitation School Regatta, organised by Lake Club at Rabindra Sarobar on Sunday. The DAV team was represente­d by Akashdeep Singh, Shahwinder Singh, Karamchand and Harpreet Singh. City-based Khalsa English High School senior girls won the ‘Fours’ event after Ballygunge Siksha Sadan School did not turn up.

South Korea on Sunday won badminton’s Sudirman Cup for the first time in 14 years with an emotional 3-2 victory over 10-time champions China. The Koreans claimed their fourth cup in the world mixed teams competitio­n with a charged 21-17, 21-13 win by Choi Sol-Gyu and Chae Yoo-Jung in the mixed doubles match.

The victory — their first in the biennial tournament since Eindhoven in 2003 — ended China’s 14-year grip on the Sudirman Cup. South Korea, who also won the Sudirman Cup in 1991 and 1993, fought back from 2-1 down in the final to claim victory.

India’s CA Bhavani Devi won gold in the sabre event of the Turnoi Satellite Fencing Championsh­ip held at Reykjavik in Iceland. In the final, she beat Sarah Jane Hampson of Britain 15-13 on points. The Chennai woman had beaten another British fencer Jessica Corby 15-11 in the semifinal.

Less than six months after taking the profession­al plunge, former world champion L Sarita Devi and Commonweal­th Games bronze-medallist Pinki Jangra will return to amateur boxing after apologisin­g to the national federation. The two, who had signed up with the Indian Boxing Council, will be rejoining the national camp after submitting letters of apology to the Boxing Federation of India (BFI).
