South Delhi civic body to revamp parking lots near Metro stations
decongest the areas around Metro stations in south Delhi, the civic agency has started a drive to revamp the parking lots located within the 100-metre radius of the stations.
There are about 40 such parking lots which were identified and developed by the South Delhi Municipal Corporation in the last one year with an aim to curb traffic mess and create parking space for visitors using Metro services.
However, the sites were not developed properly and thus they remain under-utilised.
The redevelopment is aimed at not only fighting congestion near Metro stations as well as encouraging commuters to use their vehicles only to reach Metro stations and leave their cars there. Often, Metro parkings are packed and people living far from the stations, prefer to use their cars instead of taking Metro.
According to SDMC mayor Kamaljeet Sehrawat, the agency has already started the development work at eight parking lots at Rajouri Garden, Tilak Nagar main market, Tilak Nagar flyover, metro station near Pragati Maidan, Kukreja Hospital (Tagore garden metro station), Yusuf Sarai and Gulmohar Park (near Green Park Metro Station) and Mohan Co-operative Parking (near Sarita Vihar metro station).
The work carried here included laying of interlocking tiles at parking lot, earmarking space for specially abled, proper lighting and safety arrangements, attendants to help women drivers in parking cars, usage of hand held devices, installing parking banners and other facilities.
“Each of these parking lots have space for parking of 50-100 vehicles and after their renovation additional space would be created here for the vehicles,” said the official.
“Once the work is completed here, we will take up the parking lots near Mehruali, Dwarka, Tuglakabad etc. The step has been taken in the direction of Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal to create more parking spaces and keep the public places clean,”

The agency currently has 106 parking spaces of which 92 are operated by contractor. However, to fulfil the increasing parking demand, the agency is in the process of identifying new spaces as well. “At least 93 sites have been identified in south Delhi. These can be used for developing surface or multilevel car parking space. The project is in planning stage at present,” said the official.

are also expected to be benefited with this redevelopment plan. “Residents can conveniently park their vehicles and commute to their nearest destinations using metro rails. In fact they can use the space for permanent parking of their vehicles by paying monthly charges. Even the visitors can use them in case the metro parking are full,” said the official further.
The official said the civic agency would highlight the area by putting signages.
