Three multi-level parking lots to decongest Aurobindo Marg
THE NEW PARKING LOTS WILL COME UP AT GREEN PARK, YUSUF SARAI AND ADCHINI. THE SDMC HAS WRITTEN TO THE LAND OWNING AGENCIES
To decongest Aurobindo Marg, one of the most traffic jam-prone area in Delhi, South Delhi Municipal Corporation has identified three sites in Green Park, Yusuf Sarai and Adchini to build multi-level parking lots.
A senior SDMC official said the corporation has written letters to Delhi Development Authority (DDA), DMRC and Public Works Department (PWD), the land owning agencies.
The parking site at Adhchini on DDA land is 430 square metres; the one in Yusuf Sarai Market is spread over 440 square metres and another one near Green Park Metro station measures 1,600 square metres.
“The one near Green Park Metro station is already a parking site that we plan to convert into multi-level, if DMRC permits,” he said.
The capacity of these parking lots was not known as the SDMC is yet not finalised the number of floors that these parking lots would have. As per a rough estimate, at least 85 cars could be accommodated in a four-storeyed multi-level parking site spread over 1,000 square metres.
With a vehicular population of almost one crore, finding parking lots across the national capital is a daunting task even as an ever increasing number of vehicles chokes the city’s arteries, lanes and encroaches upon footpaths and open space.
The responsibility of provid- ing adequate parking lies with the civic bodies, which also levy onetime parking charges at the time of registration of any new vehicle.
However, the situation on the ground has continued to worsen. Despite the civic bodies promising a host of measures, most have failed to take off.
Taking lessons from its earlier experiences, the South Corporation has decided that these multilevel parking sites would not be underground. The corporation’s earlier multi-level parking projects in Munirka, Hauz Khas, New Friends Colony, Jangpura, Kalkaji, Rajouri Garden and at two places in Subhash Nagar is yet to be completely functional due to several problems including flooding due to seepage of water, lack of electricity connection and design problems.
An official said the civic body is yet to decide the developer or the mode of development of the new parking sites.
