East MCD supervisors on strike over salaries

of sanitation worker supervisors’ union staged a protest at East Delhi Municipal Corporation’s headquarter on Friday demanding promotion and disbursement of salary, which is pending for the past two months.

The workers, led by president of the All Municipal Corporation Sanitation Supervisor Union Mukesh Kumar Vaidya, blocked the release of around 80 trucks and loaders that had to be released from RR depot in Jhilmil colony for sanitation work in east Delhi.

The workers were later pacified with an assurance that their demands will be looked into and more than half of vehicles were released.

Terming the protest as a photo opportunity and political in nature, east Delhi mayor Neema Bhagat said that the salaries were credited into the account of workers on Friday morning, but they still decided to continue their protest.

“We paid them salary. The other thing that they are demanding is promotion. They should realise that these are technical issues and can’t be solved in a day. This is a problem which is there since the trifurcation of corporation.”

Vaidya, however, said that the workers have still not got their salary. “More than 20 posts of sanitation supervisors are vacant for years. Several other posts have not been filled.”

A senior official in East Corporation said that the situation in east Delhi was still in control as the trucks were released but might worsen if the protest intensifies. HTC
