Speeding car kills two on pavement
Two people died and two others sustained severe injuries after they were mowed down by a speeding car that lost control and climbed a pavement near north Delhi’s Kashmere Gate on Saturday.
According to the police, the Etios car being driven by a guest teacher in a government school, climbed the pavement under a bridge while going from Rajghat to ISBT and hit the four men who were resting there.
The dead have not been identified yet. The other two — Arshad and Deepak — have been hospitalised and are undergoing treatment.
The incident was reported to the police by a passerby. The car driver, who remained at the spot after the accident, was soon arrested. “He said he tried to save a pedestrian who was trying to cross over in a hurry and took a sharp cut. He said he could not control the car’s speed and hit the divider climbing the pavement. He, however, did not flee from the spot and helped the police rush the victims to the hospital,” a senior police officer said.
The police said that the driver was not drunk and possesses a valid driving licence.
“It appears that he was speeding and lost control over the wheel. The two men who died on the spot have not yet been identified and their bodies have been kept in the morgue for identification. We did not find any document of ID proof that may help us ascertain who they were,” a police officer said.
The police have registered a case of negligence against the driver and he has been arrested. His car too has been seized. The police are now contacting the nearby shelter homes to find some contact of the family of the deceased.
“When we asked around we were told that the men often slept on the pavement but no one seemed to know their names. We have also sought assistance from beat constables and local sources to ascertain their identity,” a police officer said.
In April this year, a homeless man was killed and three others sleeping on a pavement next to him injured near Kashmere Gate when a school boy drove over them early in the morning.
