Hot and humid at 40°C, city may get rain today
Delhi witnessed another hot and humid day on Sunday with the temperature almost touching 40 degrees Celsius.
The weatherman, however, said relief was round the corner with rain expected to hit the city from Monday onwards.
The minimum temperature on Sunday was recorded at 30 degrees Celsius with the maximum temperature shooting up to 39.4 degrees Celsius, both two notches above normal.
The humidity level oscillated between 80% and 43%.
Among other stations in the city, Palam recorded maximum and minimum temperatures of 40 and 29.8 degrees Celsius, Lodhi Road 38.6 and 28.7 degrees Celsius, Ridge 39.0 and 25.6 degrees Celsius and Ayanagar 39.6 and 28.5 degrees Celsius on Sunday respectively.
According to a MeT official, rain and thundershowers triggered by easterly winds — a prelude to the approaching monsoon — are likely to hit the city from Monday night.
If predictions of the regional weather forecasting department hold true, then Delhi is likely to receive showers almost every day next week till monsoon hits the city.
“The moisture laden easterly winds would trigger rainfall almost every day next week from Monday night,” said a senior met department official.
According to him, even though the monsoon was running behind schedule, it would gather strength from Sunday and advance further and hit Delhi by June 30.
“A cyclonic circulation is brewing over the Bay of Bengal. Moisture laden winds would gush in from the sea and these would provide the monsoon the much needed impetus to advance further,” he said.
As part of its Monday forecasts, the Met department predicted generally cloudy sky with high rain expectancy. However, rain will only start on Monday night or early Tuesday morning.
The maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to be around 36 and 30 degree Celsius respectively on Monday.
