Leaky water pipeline fixed in N Delhi after minister steps in

The residents of Gali Neem Wali, Beri Wala Bagh in north Delhi breathed a sigh of relief as the newly installed leaky water pipeline in the area has been fixed in a swift pace.
HT had reported a week ago that Delhi Jal Board has done a shoddy job while installing a water pipeline, which was leaking and causing inconvenience to residents of Beri Wala Bagh in north Delhi. Delhi water minister Rajendra Gautam, after being informed, initiated action immediately. Residents said the leakage has been fixed and all the debris has also been removed.
Ashok Bhasin, president of the North Delhi Residents Welfare Federation (NDRWF), said that the repairs were made swiftly after the issue was highlighted.
“The contractors admitted that the poor condition of the pipe was due to negligence on their part. They understood that the installation was not carried out properly and immediately rectified the error,” Bhasin said.
The repair work was carried out by the DJB within 48 hours, after the staff appeared to rectify the problem on Sunday itself. The pipeline, which had been leaking since its installation, was causing disruption in regular activities for the residents due to lack of water.
“All stagnant water has been cleared up and the debris lying in multiple places has also been removed. Concrete has been put in the cracks and broken joints, and the pipe has been repaired in places where it was leaking,” he said.
The NDRWF had also written a letter to Delhi Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal, deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia and Delhi Jal Board officials.
Delhi water minister Rajendra Gautam said, “When I got to know about this, I called up the executive engineer. Action was taken immediately.”
Leakages and contamination has been a perennial problem for the capital, which faces crisis almost every summer. Delhi has nearly 45% non-revenue water, which is lost in leakage, theft and during distribution.
