government said that it has completed the road repair work ahead of monsoon.

The Public Works Department (PWD) had identified 200 km of roads which needed repair and many of them were not repaired for the past five years, officials claimed.

“Some of the roads were re-carpeted during the 2010 Commonwealth Games. We have largely divided roads in three categories- one which requires complete resurfacing, one which needs strengthening and one which requires minor surfacing,” said a PWD official

“A survey was conducted and accordingly a repair plan was prepared,” the official said.

The government had earmarked a budget of ₹180 crore. For the road repair project, the PWD had divided the city into three zones- north, east and south.

Apart from the Ring Road and Outer Ring Road, smaller roads, which come under PWD, have also been repaired.

“Flyovers were not part of this repair drive and time to time we carry out strengthening of flyovers. However, roads were lying neglected for a long time. After this repair work, no major repair would be required for the next five years,” said the official.

All roads measuring 60 feet and above, running into 1,260 kilometres across the national capital, comes are maintained by PWD. Official said heavy traffic load on the roads leads to a quick wear and tear and there was an urgent need to maintain roads for smooth flow of traffic and safety of motorists and pedestrians.

PWD is also working on a plan to reduce waterlogging during monsoon, one of regular problems faced by people during the rains. It has a centralized complaint centre for complaints about potholes and rough patches on the roads under its control.

The PWD comes under the Delhi government and the blame game between the agency and the civic bodies over fixing responsibility for desilting the drains and maintenance of roads is a major hurdle in the city having a smooth run during monsoons.
