Sports trials begin, ECA 1st round ends
As the preliminary round of trials for the extra-curricular activities (ECA) quota closed on Tuesday, Delhi University kicked off the first round of trials for the Sports quota.
The preliminary trials for students applying to the ECA category began on June 17.
The trials for men’s basketball, football, judo, and women’s volleyball was held at different DU venues on Tuesday. The trials for athletics, cross country, boxing, canoeing, kayaking, rowing, women’s cricket, women’s hockey, and shooting will be held on Wednesday. Trials for men’s cricket will be held on July 1 at SGTB Khalsa College.
The sports trials are expected to go on till July 6, and the complete sports merit list is expected to be released on July 13. Students would then have until July 15 to get their documents verified and sports admissions approved by the colleges.
Some DU colleges reserve up to 5% of their seats for Sports and ECA quota. Students get a relaxation of up to 15% in their cutoffs under the ECA quota, according to Shalini, the head of ECA admissions at DU.
Under the Sports quota, students have to fulfil the minimum requirement for admission to their desired programmes, and if they clear the sports merit list after the rounds of trials, they can seek admission in various DU colleges based on their seat requirements, said CS Dubey, chairman of the DU sports council.
This year, the DU had received as many as 12,914 and 20,207 applications under the Sports and ECA categories, respectively. The most common extracurricular activity is NCC with 3,281 applicants, followed closely by dance with 2,797 applications. The first sports admission list will be notified by colleges on July 15.
There are 24 DU colleges that take in students on football quota, 30 colleges offer admissions for athletics, 42 for basketball. Thirty-one colleges take in cricketers.
Among those applying for the Sports quota, most applicants have applied for football, with 1,557 applications. Cricket stands at the fifth position with 1,087 applications, trailing behind Basketball, Athletics, and Volleyball.
