The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) is planning to install 23 sewage treatment plants to maintain greenery in Lutyen’s zone, without aggravating the city’s water scarcity.

While six plants have already been set up, three more would be coming by the end of July. Another 10 plants would be completed by March 2018. Four more plants would be set up in future.

Nearly 48% of the area that comes under NDMC has green cover. At present, the NDMC has to depend on groundwater or the Delhi Jal Board to maintain greenery. The STPs would help them use treated sewage water.

One such STP (the sixth in the series) was inaugurated by Justice Swatanter Kumar, chairperson of the National Green Tribunal, at Nehru Park on Saturday.

“The Nehru Park STP is based on a green technology named Solid Bio-Technology. It won’t generate any sound or air pollution as no chemicals are used,” said NDMC chairman Naresh Kumar. He also said that NDMC had earlier set up a first-of-itskind STP in New Delhi area — which is based on Membrane Bio-Reactor Technology — at Shanti Path, Moti Bagh.

“Use of such simple technologies and cost-effective methods will not only preserve the environment, but also enrich it. I urge other local bodies to study this model for replication,” said Justice Kumar.
