Six persons were injured when an allegedly speeding container truck broke through the road divider of the Ring Road near AIIMS in the early hours of Sunday.

The truck went on to hit five cars, crushing some of them in the process. Of the six injured, five were car occupants. One other victim was a man walking on the roadside who happened to get trapped.

Chinmoy Biswal, additional DCP (south), said none of the victims received life-threatening injuries and some of them have already been discharged from the hospital.

The truck driver, meanwhile, abandoned his vehicle and fled the accident spot. He has been identified and his truck, bearing a Rajasthan registration number plate, has been seized.

Among the injured is the minor son of an army officer who was travelling in a car with his family. The boy is out of danger, police said.

Police said that the incident was reported at 1.10 am by one of the passersby who narrowly escaped getting hurt in the accident.

The lucky survivor informed the police after which a team was rushed to the spot and the injured persons were taken to AIIMS trauma centre. Three of them were discharged soon while the rest continued to receive treatment.

According to the police, the truck at “high speed” was going from Safdarjung towards South Extension in south Delhi when the accident occurred.

The driver lost control and the truck rammed the divider, broke it and reached the oppo- site carriageway.

Five cars that were heading from South Extension towards Safdarjung were hit before they could realise what was happening.

Other motorists stopped their vehicles and tried to catch the errant driver, but he managed to give them the slip and escape.

The additional DCP said a case of rash and negligent driving and causing hurt by negligence has been registered at Kotla Mubarakpur police station in this case and a team sent to nab the accused driver.

The government is looking to simplify the registration process for e-rickshaws and expedite the payment of subsidies. A three-member committee was recently set up for the purpose and prepared a report suggesting ways to simplify the registration process and ensure timely disbursal of subsidy. PTI
