Throughout life
Sneha usually shares with her mom the high points of her day at school, including all the better and no-so-good experiences as well as the various shades in between.
When asked to choose if they would prefer either the gifts that they get from parents or the time spent with them, most students whom School Times contacted tended to imply that while gifts are always welcome, what is of more value to Gen-Next are the precious moments they spend in the company of the elders during which varied generations discuss the youngsters’ hopes, worries and fears.
Most students fondly recalled the happy moments that they had spent along with parents during family outings or visits to malls, multiplexes, amusement parks or other entertainment hubs, food joints or amusement parks. Some of them also seemed too young to come to terms with the professional and other responsibilities that tended to keep one or both the parents away from them for most part of the day.
Most students whom this reporter spoke to either longed to learn basic skills such as riding a bicycle, photography, flying kites or cooking from their parents or had fond memories of having done so. Other favourite activities that they enjoy with their elders included playing ludo, cards, badminton or cricket.
Asked to identify those moments when they most wanted to confide in their parents, the students mentioned instances such as when they came faceto-face with bullies at school, were teased by friends or when they fell ill.
In the opinion of youngsters, such trying times were bearable only when their parents were around, and, quite understandably, most of them felt a huge void in life whenever they had to tackle such situations in the absence of parents.
Succinctly expressing their views, the students added that even their most happy moments, which usually mark those times when they excel in studies or in extra-curricular activities, are incomplete without a pat on the back from their parents.
I consider myself lucky because my parents devote a considerable amount of time for me. Often, they discuss with me my day-to-day concerns as well as my progress in studies and extracurricular activities. I take part in several activities in the company of my parent such as shopping for necessities, strolls in the park and supper. I do these mostly along with my mother. Guidance from parents, grandparents and elders is important in life. These valuable inputs motivate children to battle on in the midst of tough challenges and help them to take the right path
