UAE para-athlete, 36, dies at training before world event

United Arab Emirates para-athlete Abdullah Hayayei has died following a training incident casting a pall over the World Para-athletics championsh­ips which begin in London on Friday. He was 36.

Hayayei, who was set to compete in the shot put, discus and javelin F34 events, suffered the fatal injury while training in London on Tuesday.

Although the emergency services were called, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Johannesbu­rg Indian Women’s Hockey team secured a 1-0 win against Chile to affirm a place for the knockout stage of the Women’s Hockey World League Semi Final.

As soon as Preeti Dubey secured a goal in the 38th minute, India registered their first win of the tournament.

India were beaten 4-1 by U.S.A. in their previous game, while their match against South Africa ended in a goalless draw.

After the goal, Chile attacked relentless­ly in the final quarter, but India defended well in the death. India will next play Argentina on July 16 in the quarter-finals of the tournament.

Singapore The India U-23 football team conceded a secondhalf goal to go down 0-1 to Singapore U-23 in the second tie of their two-match internatio­nal friendly series here on Wednesday.

Midfielder Ikshan Fandi scored the lone goal from the penalty spot in the 52nd minute at the Choa Chu Kan stadium. Singapore have thus drawn the series at 1-1.

Fandi helped the hosts take the lead from the spot after India’s Salam Ranjan Singh brought him down inside the penalty box.

Singapore were the superior team in terms of tactics and technique, troubling the Indian defence repeatedly with accurate passes and crosses.
