Delhi Police special cell on Friday arrested one person for allegedly running an illegal gun racket. The alleged arms supplier, identified as Idrish, 49, was nabbed from Jafrabad.

The police also recovered 10 pistols of 9mm and 7.65 mm calibers, along with six spare magazines, from his possession.

“A total of 10 illegal semi-automatic sophisticated pistols with six spare magazines have been recovered from the accused. The recovered weapons are engraved with “Made in USA” markings,” said PS Kushwaha, DCP, Special Cell.

Kushwaha said police received an information about arms manufacturers and suppliers from Madhya Pradesh and Bihar supplying sophisticated firearms in Delhi-NCR and adjoining areas of UP. “Information was collected on these arms traders and suppliers by deploying sources in and around Delhi and West UP,” he said.

According to the DCP, the police received a tip-off that the illegal arms suppliers would visit Jafrabad around 10.30pm on Thursday to deliver a cache of semi-automatic weapons to his contacts. The special cell team laid a trap.

“At 10.50pm, a man carrying a black bag on his left shoulder came on foot from Seelampur side and stood near Tent Wala School in Jafrabad, waiting for someone. However, no one turned up. At around 11pm, when he was about to leave, we apprehended him. On checking his bag, we found the firearms. A case of Arms Act has been registered,” Kushwaha said.

The militants are believed to be members of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), and according to the police, were planning a major attack on army and police.

While Chauhan died in a city hospital, Srivastava survived the accident. Bhasin was arrested from ISBT Kashmere Gate while he was fleeing to Chandigarh.

Though the court had passed the verdict in May, the quantum of punishment was pronounced only on Saturday. It also granted statutory bail to Bhasin, enabling him to file an appeal in the high court. The bail bond was fixed at Rs 50,000 with surety of a similar amount.

Bhasin was earlier cleared of culpable homicide, which provides for a maximum jail term of up to 10 years.

The court said a copy of the judgment must be sent to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, so he can consider steps to enhance the punishment prescribed for such offences under section 304-A of the Indian Penal Code.

The judge also quoted a song from the movie Jindagi aur Toofan – which goes ‘Aadmi chahe toh taqdeer badal sakte hai, poori duniya ki woh tasveer badal sakte hai, aadmi soch toh le uska irada kya hai (Humankind can change its fate if it wants to, can change the entire picture of the world if it wants to, as long as there is a strong resolve to do so)’ – to buttress his point.
