The Delhi University has extended admissions under its fifth cutoff list till Thursday, and also announced releasing a sixth cutoff list on July 22.

DU has around 56,000 undergraduate seats, of which approximately 50,000 are for merit based courses.

The first merit list of students who have cleared the entrance tests for four entrance based undergraduate programmesBachelor of Management Studies, Bachelor of Business Administration (FIA), BA (Hons) in Business Economics, and Bachelor in Elementary Education released on Wednesday, and students will have until Saturday to get their seats confirmed after document verification.

Though DU has approved over 50,000 admissions by Wednesday, there are some colleges which still have up to 47% seats vacant.

“When we look at the numbers in totality, it looks like we are almost done. However, when we split the numbers college-wise, we see that there are colleges that have vacant seats,” explained Manoj Khanna the convener of the admissions committee at DU.

This discrepancy in number is because of many colleges, especially the sought after colleges, deal with over admissions.

Certain colleges, like the Shyam Lal Evening college, have almost half their seats still vacant. “We have filled almost 300 out of our 570 seats. Though we have had many admissions, we have also had almost as many withdrawals. So we have seats in almost all our courses,” said Anjana Gusain, the admissions assistant at the college.

At the Atma Ram Sanatan Dharam College too almost a quarter of the seats are expected to be vacant, according to the principal, Gyantosh Jha.

Colleges like Deshbandhu and Bhim Rao Ambedkar, may have filled almost all of their general category seats, but still have seats vacant in certain reserved categories.

At Deshbandhu, the principal expects a few seats reserved for students coming from Scheduled Tribes to remain vacant, while at Bhima Rao Ambedkar, a handful of seats in the general category and a few in the OBC and ST categories are expected to be vacant.

“We may have up to 15% of our seats, that is around 150 seats, vacant. However, this may not be a very sizeable number when we have 1050 seats,” said GK Arora, the principal.

To help fill the reserved category seats, a special drive for admission will also be operational from July 31 until August 5.

“Once the new cutoff is released, the seats in most colleges will be filled,” said MK Pandit, the chairperson of the admissions committee.
