The spate of kidnappings in the city continued with a five-year-old boy from east Delhi’s Old Seemapuri being the latest victim. Amaan was kidnapped from outside his house on Friday by a former tenant of his parents’ property.

The kidnapper demanded a ransom of Rs8 lakh from his mother after which a manhunt was launched to nab them. The police finally rescued the child from a safe house in Tahirpur nearby and arrested the suspect.

The crime was reported around 2.30 pm on Friday after Amaan went missing while playing outside his house. His mother, Akhbari, works at a shop nearby. Her husband works in Quwait.

The kidnapper ordered Akhbari to pack ₹8 lakh cash in a handbag and leave it at a spot near Kashmere Gate bus terminal in lieu of the child.

Akhbari ignored the call presuming it to be a prank, but the kidnapper again called in the evening. She then decided to inform the police. A team was immediately formed to track down the caller.

Akhbari managed to gather the ransom but the police decided to lay a trap. A cop posed as an auto driver and took her to the spot where the kidnapper asked her to leave the cash. A policewoman, meanwhile, accompanied her posing as her sister.

The cash bag was left at the spot after which Akhbari left the scene. Soon, a man came to the spot and tried to collect the bag, but the police team caught him.

The alleged kidnapper was identified as Asabul, a former tenants at a building owned by Akhbari. His questioning led to the recovery of the child.
