Tenders for skywalk to ease traffic at ITO floated, says Jain
years of delay, the ambitious plan of decongesting the busy ITO intersection is finally taking shape.
On Sunday, Public Works Department minister Satyendar Jain announced that the department has initiated tender process for construction of a skywalk and foot overbridge “at the junction of Sikandra Road, Mathura Road, Tilak Marg, and Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg at ‘W’ point and near Hans Bhawan ITO.”
The skywalk will connect Sikandra Road, Mathura Road, Tilak Marg and Bahadurshah Zafar Marg with ITO Metro station and the Delhi High Court. The project is significant because of the high density of vehicular and pedestrian traffic at ITO crossing. The area has numerous offices, two Metros and a railway station.
“Tender process started for construction of Skywalk & Footover bridge at Mathura Road,Tilak Bridge, ITO,” the minister tweeted.
The project is to be constructed at an estimated cost of ₹44.23 crore and is slated to be completed by April next year.
The skywalk and FOB were designed through a competition in which the winner was awarded ₹2.5 lakh. The Centre has agreed to finance 80% of the project, while the remaining funds will be provided by Delhi government.
Once the project is complete, pedestrians will be able to cross the road without having to wade through traffic. The FOB will start at Pragati Maidan Metro station and will have three arms. One will go under the Metro line and take pedestrians to Tilak Bridge railway station. Another will turn left and drop close to Pragati Maidan . The third arm will open at ITO crossing.
