Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) president along with five other students may not be able to continue studying at the university after they refused pay the fine imposed on them on the last day of registration on Wednesday.

At the beginning of every academic year, all students have to pay their dues, including mess bill and fines imposed on account of indiscipline by proctor office, to register to continue as a student at JNU.

“A student needs to get all clearances before registration. If the students refuse to pay the fine imposed on them by the proctor office, they stop being a student of the university,” said Pramod Kumar, JNU registrar.

Students said it was an attempt by the administration to throw them out from the university.

“Today, the last date for semester registration in JNU is over, still 5-6 students, including me, did not get registration for the next semester. Now the condition is that our academic work of last many years will go waste if we will not get registration for the next semester,” said Mohit Pandey, president JNUSU.

Pandey, who faces a fine of ₹20,000, said the vice-chancellor was setting enquiries against students and stopping their academic work to “disallow all kinds of dissent”. “In the beginning of this semester, almost 30 students did not get registration. We ran a campaign to collect funds to pay the fine for some of them,” he said.

Four students — Mulayam Singh, Shakeel Anjum, Prashant Kumar, and Dileep Kumar, moved court on the issue. “The court gave us three more days to pay the fine,” said Mulayam Singh.

The enquiries against JNUSU president range from pasting posters to asking for appointment with the VC, he said.

Meanwhile, the Delhi high court on Wednesday reiterated its single judge’s order asking the four JNU students to pay the fine imposed on them by July 28 if they wished to get registered for the next semester of their PhD course.

The bench said that if the fine was paid then no other hindrances be created in the registration. However, if the fine was not paid then the students would have to vacate their hostels, the court said and listed the students appeal for hearing on July 31.
