A day after a 40-yearold woman was stabbed in front of her four-year-old daughter outside the Thyagaraj stadium in south Delhi, the police on Tuesday arrested her husband.

DCP South Ishwar Singh said Santoshi’s husband Vinod was arrested from his cousin’s house, where he was hiding after the murder. The man told police that he murdered his wife because even though he was suffering from tuberculosis, Santoshi neglected him and was allegedly having an extramarital affair.

At around 8pm on Monday, Santoshi was returning home with her child after visiting a weekly market near her house in Prem Colony, Kotla Mubarakpur, when she was stabbed at least four times outside the stadium. Three security guards at the stadium, who heard her cries, rushed to the spot and informed the police control room, after which she was taken the Trauma Centre, where she was declared dead on arrival.

According to the police, during investigation, they visited the woman’s house in Kotla Mubarakpur and learnt that her husband Vinod was absconding. “We conducted raids and arrested him from Mundka in outer Delhi,” said DCP Singh.

Vinod, who works as a fruit vendor, said he got married to Santoshi in 2016. Santoshi was earlier married in Rajasthan and has six children from the marriage. During interrogation, Vinod confessed that the couple had regular fights because he suspected Santoshi of having an extra-marital affair. On Monday morning, six-seven hours before he murdered her, he had reportedly seen her with another man.

Explaining the sequence of events, police said that on Monday afternoon Vinod bought a knife and alcohol from INA and asked his wife to join him for drinks. “Later in the evening, he took her to the local market. At around 8pm, when they reached Thyagaraj stadium, he asked her about her affair. They had a quarrel and he stabbed her,” said a senior police officer.

Vinod confessed to the crime and said he left the knife at the murder spot before fleeing to his cousin’s place.
