Ankur Mittal clinches individual and team gold

Indian shooter Ankur Mittal clinched the individual as well as the team gold medal in men’s double trap at the seventh Asian Shotgun Championsh­ip in Astana, Kazakhstan on Saturday. Mittal shot 71 in the six-man final to finish at the top of the podium.

Wimbledon champion Garbine Muguruza made short work of Ana Konjuh to move into the semi-finals of the Stanford Classic on Friday, while second seed Petra Kvitova was thrashed 6-2 6-0 by 18-year-old American Catherine Bellis. Top seed Muguruza, playing in the first match of the day, eased through her quarter-final 6-1 6-3 against the fifth seed at Stanford University in California. Meanwhile, Philipp Kohlschrei­ber claimed the eighth ATP Tour title of his career by brushing aside Joao Sousa in the final of the claycourt event at Kitzbuhel, Austria.

Indian tennis player Yuki Bhambri was knocked out of the Citi Open by South Africa’s Kevin Anderson in the quarter-finals of the men’s singles event here on Saturday.

After losing the first set, the Indian qualifier rebounded strongly to win the second before again going down to eventually to suffer 4-6, 6-4, 3-6 defeat against Anderson in the quarter-final clash that lasted almost two hours. This was his best performanc­e on the ATP World Tour.

Two Indian Greco-Roman wrestlers Manish and Sajan put up contrastin­g performanc­es to enter the bronze-medal round in the Junior World Wrestling championsh­ips in Tampere, Finland. Manish came up with a dominating show to advance to the next round, Sajan made it only after opponent from Kyrgyzstan reached the finals..
