A 32-year-old school bus driver slit his wife’s throat and repeatedly bludgeoned her with a cooking gas cylinder in south Delhi’s Badarpur as their 10-year-old son watched the murder from the next room in which the father had locked him.

His face and clothes covered in blood, Parveen Taneja then walked to the local police station and gave himself up. He also carried with him the knife he had attacked 30-year-old Minakshi with, police said on Monday, two days after the murder.

Their son, who is elder of the two siblings, said his mother was shouting his name and asking for help. “But my father had locked me in a room and I could do nothing,” the 10-year-old told mediapersons. His brother is four.

Taneja said he suspected Minakshi was having an affair and on Saturday they had another argument about it, deputy commis- sioner of police (south-east) Romil Baaniya said.

The couple, married for 12 years, was struggling financially. Taneja couldn’t keep a job and they often fought over it, neighbours said. Fed up with the abuse, Minakshi moved out of their home in Badarpur’s Molarband village with her children and was living with her parents in the same neighbourhood.

Taneja visited them there. On Saturday, he again came to see them. Minakshi’s parents were away at work.
