Man held for sexually harassing student

A 42-year-old man, who allegedly sexually harassed a 20-year-old Dalit medical student, was arrested from Ghaziabad on Monday.

The arrest was made a day after the woman tweeted that she will commit suicide, if action is not taken against her complaint filed at Jarcha police station of Greater Noida on July 10.

Police said the accused Manish Vashisth was arrested from Brij Vihar Colony of Ghaziabad, where he was staying with his friend. Vashisth had switched off his number after he got to know that police were looking for him.

Circle officer, Dadri, Piyush Kumar Singh said, “We mounted technical surveillan­ce following which he was arrested from Ghaziabad in evening by a team of Jarcha police station. Vashisth will be produced in court on Tuesday.”

Singh said that the accused man was questioned and he refused to have any contact with the Bachelor of Ayurveda, Medicine and Surgery (BAMS) student. “Vashisth told us that he had a good rapport with the woman’s family and they owe him money. This is his take and further action will be decided only after he is produced in court,” said Singh.

Police had registered a case of case of sexual harassment at Jarcha police station after the woman filed the complaint, but no arrest was made. On Sunday, the woman threatened on twitter to take her life after being sexually harassed by Vashisth.

According to woman, the accused started harassing her when she was in Kendriya Vidyalaya located on the premises of NTPC Dadri. She passed school in 2015. She said Vashisht lived in the same campus and his wife worked as a senior HR official in NTPC.

She alleged that after passing Class 12 in 2015, she got admission in Aligarh and Vashisht started visiting her there also and would inquire about her from her friends.

Following her tweet to Uttar Pradesh police on Sunday, the local police took cognizance of the matter and added the charges of ST/SC Act to the FIR. The tweet was followed by a message in which she threatened to commit suicide, if action was not taken.
