Three robbers who posed as CBI officials arrested

- Karn Pratap Singh karn.singh@hindustantimes.com

days after a gang of nine robbers robbed a jeweller in central Delhi’s Karol Bagh posing as CBI officials, the crime branch on Sunday arrested three of them from Shahbad Dairy in outer Delhi.

Police said the robbers are affiliated to notorious Neeraj Bawana gang. One of the arrested men, Neeraj Singh, is a relative of the jailed gangster.

The other two are Narender Vesnav alias Sunny and Madan. A police uniform, one countrymade pistol, a knife, one roll of medical tape and a Pulsar bike were recovered from them.

Police said the gang was inspired by Bollywood movie Special 26 and tried to play out its plot while committing the robbery at jeweller Nawal Kishore Khandelwal’s home on July 27.

G Ramgopal Naik, deputy commissioner of police (crime), said the police had information they would go to Shahbad Dairy on a motorcycle to meet someone. “A trap was laid and the three were caught when they arrived on a Pulsar bike,” the DCP said.

Neeraj Singh told the police that he used to run a jewellery shop in Bawana but he suffered losses and owed money to financers. Singh formed a gang and visited Chandni Chowk frequently to identify targets. They came in contact with one Pandit, an accountant in a jeweller’s shop. Pandit gave them information about Khandelwal.

On July 27, Neeraj and Harbansh stayed in the car while seven others went to Khandelwal’s house. Sunny, in police uniform, rang the bell. When Khandelwal’s wife opened the door, all seven entered the house and robbed them.

The Delhi High Court has sought response of the Centre, CBSE and the Delhi University (DU) on a transgender’s plea, challenging the guidelines of these authorities for change of name and gender by a person.

The guidelines of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) say that request for such changes in its records would be entertained only if it is made before publication of the result, the petition said.

The university norms, on the other hand, say that for change of name and gender, the same have to be first altered in the records of the board.

The Department of Publications of the Centre requires that a sex reassignment surgery be undergone before change of name and gender.

The petitioner was assigned the male gender at birth but identifies self as a transgender.

His plea alleged that the criteria laid down by the various authorities for change of name and gender are “arbitrary and unreasonable”. He also claimed that the Supreme Court had in 2014 held that insistence on a sex reassignment surgery for declaring one’s gender was illegal. HTC
