An engineering student died on Monday at a private hospital in Hyderabad after doctors attempted to abort her pregnancy that was more than 20 weeks old.

Police filed a case against the doctors of Anusha Maternity Hospital and Nursing Home, since such abortions cannot be carried out without a court order.

The woman, K Harika, was 21 years old. According to police, Harika and her partner S Madhu approached the hospital for an abortion on August 5.

Hospital superintendent Dr Girija Rani agreed to perform the surgery. The attempt failed and Harika suffered from excessive bleeding, prompting staff to shift her to another hospital, where she was declared brought dead.

Harika’s family members rushed to Anusha hospital and staged a dharna demanding action against the doctors.

“Irrespective of whether the affair between the girl and her boyfriend was legal or illegal, conducting abortion is a crime. We have booked a case under Section 312 (causing miscarriage) and 314 (death caused by act done with intent to cause miscarriage) of the IPC,” Vanasthalipuram police inspector S Murali Krishna told HT.

Police have shifted the body to government-run Osmania Hospital for an autopsy, while Girija Rani and Madhu were taken into custody for questioning.

“We are also verifying whether the hospital has violated the guidelines of Indian Medical Council and District Medical and Health Officer (DMHO) for conducting the abortions,” the police officer said.

WHEN THE SURGERY FAILED, RESULTING IN EXCESSIVE BLEEDING, STAFF OF THE NURSING HOME QUICKLY SHIFTED THE GIRL TO ANOTHER HOSPITAL WHERE SHE WAS DECLARED DEAD
