speeding Mahindra XUV rammed a scooty and a pedestrian at a busy traffic junction in west Delhi’s Paschim Vihar on Tuesday morning, killing two persons.

The SUV driven recklessly went on to break through a wall before plunging into a drain. One of the victims was thrown several feet into the air before landing on the car’s bonnet, CCTV footage of the accident showed.

The man behind the SUV’s wheel emerged from the car, allegedly stared at an eyewitness and then fled.

The eyewitness, a private security guard, stopped an e-rickshaw, loaded the injured men and took them to a nearby hospital. But the two scooty riders, Durgesh and Arvind, died during treatment and the pedestrian is still critical.

The accident happened on Ramdev Marg in Paschim Vihar at 9.30am on Tuesday. The XUV500, that appeared to be at high speed, was allegedly trying to cross the signal at a busy trafthe fic junction when it hit a pedestrian and a scooty while taking a U-turn on the road ahead.

Immediately after the hit, the car drove into a drain after breaking through a wall.

All this was witnessed by many people, including Rajesh, a security guard at an educational institute near the spot. “The SUV driver paused for a while on spotting me, but then immediately escaped from the spot,” said Rajesh who rushed victims to a hospital.

Police said the number of XUV was enough to identify the car owner. Identified as Saurabh Jain, a resident of Ashok Vihar, the man allegedly behind the wheel was arrested the same day.

A case of causing death by negligence, causing hurt by a dangerous act and rash driving has been registered against him at Paschim Vihar police station.
