Hunt on for man who stole police’s gypsy
THE POLICE FEAR THE THIEVES MAY HAVE INTENTIONALLY TARGETED THIS VEHICLE
white gypsy hired by the Delhi Police to serve one of its quick response teams (QRTs) was stolen from south Delhi’s Kotla Mubarakpur village on Sunday morning, leaving the police in a tizzy ahead of the Independence Day.
The police are afraid the vehicle could be misused by criminals as it could give them easy access to sensitive places. Police fear thieves could have intentionally targeted this vehicle as it has ‘Delhi Police’ written on it.
The theft happened around 5am on Sunday, but the police are unable to trace the vehicle.
According to Ishwar Singh, DCP (south), the white gypsy with a soft roof was among several such vehicles rented by the police to help police teams quickly reach crime spots or people in distress. One such vehicle is attached with each police station, the officer said.
In this case, the gypsy was of Tughlaq Road police station and was driven by a private person hired by the Delhi Police, the DCP said.
After his duty ended at around 10pm on Saturday, the driver took the gypsy to Kotla Mubarakpur village where he lives. “But when he wanted to report to duty on Sunday morning, he could not spot the vehicle. He alerted the police,” the DCP said, adding that a CCTV camera installed near the parking area has caught the theft but the face of the thief is not recognisable.
