AIIMS to get dharamshala for outstation patients, relatives
All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) will get a 280-bed rest house (dharmashala) from September for outstation patients and their relatives who have to stay in Delhi for treatment.
At any given time, nearly 2,000 patients are admitted in the hospital and the 425 beds currently available in other dharmashalas are not enough to accommodate all the patients and their relatives. Nearly 10,000 patients come to the outpatient department of the hospital as well, of whom nearly 40% are from other states and do not have any place to stay in Delhi.
“There are several patients and their relatives who spend the night on the pavements, bus stops and outside the metro stations near the hospital. This dharmashala will provide shelter to 200 patients and their relatives,” said Dr Randeep Guleria. The dharmashala, to be built at a cost of ₹30 crore, will be located near the AIIMS trauma centre.
The hospital has now formed a committee that will formulate guidelines to look at corporations for sponsorship.
To promote research in the institute, a core research facility will be built in an existing building, with all the latest equipment and facilities. An innovation division will also help researchers in conducting pilot projects.
By next month, the premiere institute will also get a patent and technology cell which will help doctors in securing patents for their inventions and connecting with the manufacturers to develop market-ready products.
To streamline the processes and make it easier for aspiring MBBS students, AIIMS will also start online counselling.
“The new platform will help students select their college from their homes,” said Dr Guleria.
